Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.

YA Review My Thoughts

Obsidio is the final book in the young adult series, The Illuminae Files by author duo Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. Let’s start out by saying I LOVED OBDISIO! It was a crazy, crazy ride and I cannot stop thinking about this book, about the characters and about this series. If you have read obsidio, you know what I mean. If you have not, what are you waiting for?? Because I know so many people dearly love this series, I am going to do something a little different. This review is not for the many, many fans of the series. No, this review is for the people who are reluctant to read the series because Science Fiction is not their thing, or because of the hype or because of any number of other reasons. I used to be one of you. But now that I have read the first two books twice and binge read the entire series for the Obsidio release, I have to convert you to become as big of a fan of this series as I have become.

So whether you are reluctant to pick up this series because you don’t think it will live up to the incredible hype or whether you are just not a huge space or sci fi fan. I am here to tell you, you need to read this series. It is not like anything you have read before. This is due in large part to the uniquely awesome format the book is told in. I know it has been said a lot, but the format of this series is like nothing else I have ever read. I absolutely loved it. It has to be super difficult to write and put together because I could tell how complicated and detailed the world is. I mean the scope of this series is just huge. because the world is so huge, it took me a  little bit of time to catch my bearings. But once I was about 120 pages into book one, I was hooked and during my binge read I basically read the entire trilogy straight in the course of two days. The story is told though emails and chats and files. We are basically the characters searching through things and reading redacted files, notes, clues and all kinds of things. It is so immersive and quite frankly, awesome. It is part novel, part be your own detective story. I completely love it. I became really, really absorbed in Illuminae Files and in Obsidio. I was totally immersed in the world Jay and Amie created, and I was right along side the characters, overwhelmed, and confused at points and totally fascinated with the whole thing. Plus, the twists and turns are crazy! Crazy people! And they don’t stop getting crazy. In fact, they just get crazier and crazier!

Because I don’t want to get spoilery, and because this review is to convince new fans they need to read this series, let’s back it up to the first book. The Illuminae files are the story of our two main characters Ezra and Kady. At the start of the first book, the two of them had just broken up, and then their planet gets destroyed and they are caught up in a whirlwind escape, and then the adventure is just starting for them. As the books go on we are introduced to a whole crew of new characters, including Asha and rhys, nik, hanna and Aiden, the AI computer that runs war strategies on board that totally becomes a character of his own. Aidan blew my mind! Seriously, I cannot fangirl over a character enough. Aidan is complex and interesting and fascinating and I just had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next with all of them. I loved that as the series goes on, you start to see more and more POVs show up.

Bottom line: The Illuminae Files is a series that you really have to experience for yourself. Gosh, this book was an incredible experience. I don’t remember anything like it. It really earns the title of unique and different.  Not to mention Obsidio completely blew my mind! It made me feel all the feelings! I am still feeling all the feelings! It is always going to be a favorite of mine because I will never forget this book. Read this series! But if you are new to the series, like I was, now is the perfect time to grab a copy and start reading.
