‘The Ghost of Saddle Mountain’ written by Fred Whitman

a Book Review by Mark Graham
This is a story of culture and heritage. It is a mystery that only family can solve. It is also a story that shows how Dreams can work for us and makes us use our talents. The story of a boy called Hoot. Hoot discovers that his family has a mystery that needs to be solved to help his family regain a piece of family history. This piece of family history is one of culture and the supernatural. A book that also teaches about the gypsy life. Hoot throughout the story will learn a lot about himself and his family heritage.
Fred Whitman has written a story for Middle School Readers, but is quite enjoyable for adults to read. John Fisher’s illustrations are well done and shows the action in the scenes depicted. The pictures also show the characters personalities as well as what they look like. This is a story that could be user by counselors and social workers working with children and teens. After reading this story discussion topics could range from discrimination, school bullies to the supernatural and how these ideals affect individuals and groups. ‘The Ghost of Saddle Mountain’ is a book that also gives a brief history of the gypsy life interspersed throughout the book. Mr. Whitman and Mr. Fisher have written and drawn a novel that could be used to teach and learn more about our selves and others.
The Ghost of Saddle Mountain is Fred Whitman’s debut novel. He is a retired dentist and teacher who currently carves faces in stone. He resides in his home town of Ojai, California, where he is proud uncle to nine nieces and nephews
