What is friendship?  John and Natalie have written and illustrated the story of ‘Sara Flutterbye and the Spooky Woods’ that show what many forms that friendship is made up of in the world.  This is the story of Sara, Abby and Leisha and how strangers become friends to solve a mystery.  ‘Sara Flutterbye’ meets a special friend on her journey through the woods and learns lessons to pass on to others. This is a story about the unexpected.

The illustrations told the story as well as the words. Natalie used primary colors as well as many hues of the colors as in the picture of the woods when Sara was camping.  The reader could feel the emotions presented through out the story, for example when the character of Tanager being so vivid with the use of the colors.  I could feel the goosebumps when Sara thought she was being followed by something.  Tanager made me, as the reader feel safe with the color chosen for Tanager as well as alert for the rest of the story.

This is a story for upper elementary children who are starting to form many friendships, so it is a good story to learn social skills and more interest in science and more specifically butterflies and nature in general.  Another lesson is about society and when creatures gave hints in safety, if I read right. This is also a story of responsibility and caring for humans and animals.

A five star read.
